Android Battery Health Indicator Release Date

Find out how Android's battery health indicator can save you time and money.
Google is estimated to release a full battery health feature with Android 15. Android 15 is due for release somewhere between July 2024 and September 2024.
Previous Android battery health reports were all based on estimates of the battery capacity based on data collected over days or weeks. Those estimates could be inaccurate.
The upcoming battery health indicator results in the OS sharing information with the battery so instead of estimates based on apps monitoring phone usage the battery health is measured by the OS (operating system) communication directly with the battery this is more accurate. Generally speaking, a battery draining faster than it used to is a battery issue but not always. A battery health indicator takes the guesswork out of a personal diagnostic and saves you the time and potential money of taking it to a professional who may have to take your phone apart to get an accurate diagnostic.

Why You Should Care About Battery Health
Battery degradation over time is inevitable resulting in the battery's overall capacity being reduced so it does not last as long.  Iphones are expected to experience battery degradation in 2 years. Samsung's Galaxy S10 was expected to experience battery degradation in 2-3 years and was released in 2020. According to my research as of 2023 some S10's have experienced notable degradation and some have not.
With battery health accurate battery health measurements, buyers can take into account the long-term battery prospect. So for sellers with great batteries or buyers of second-hand Androids, this will affect choices.

Why New EU Laws Matter To You
The vast majority of Android phones are made with built-in batteries. You can replace most built-in batteries but you need special tools to do so. This is where the EU's new laws may interest you. The European Council has passed a law that requires all smartphones to have removable batteries by 2027, removable as in by hand without the need for special tools.
What To Do
With built-in batteries, if you do not know what you are doing you can pay to get someone to fix it for you. A battery will usually cost around £20 if you fix it yourself and another 20-40 to get it fixed by a professional. And diagnostic cost if you cannot get it done for free and are not sure of the problem. A removable battery does not incur these costs.
